Why Rest Isn’t Lazy — And Why We All Need More of It
Oct 31, 2025When was the last time you truly rested?
Not just switched off the lights and scrolled for a while — but actually let your breath settle, your mind quieten, and your body soften?
For most of us, that kind of rest feels strangely elusive. We’re brilliant at doing: we plan, push, produce and perform — until our bodies start whispering (or shouting) for us to stop. Yet the world around us rarely makes it easy to pause. We’re told to keep going, to stay busy, to be endlessly productive.
But the nervous system doesn’t work that way.
As a yoga therapist and teacher of 16 years, I’ve seen first-hand what happens when we push beyond our natural rhythms. Fatigue, anxiety, low mood, digestive issues — they’re all signs that our system has forgotten how to unwind.
That’s why I created SYRN, a restorative sequence combining Somatic movement, Yin yoga, Restorative postures, and Yoga Nidra — a method designed to help you rest intelligently.
Each element plays a specific role in re-balancing the body and mind:
-
Somatics reawakens subtle movement and proprioception — your brain’s internal map of the body.
-
Yin allows tissues and joints to open slowly, inviting reflection and stillness.
-
Restorative yoga soothes the vagus nerve, easing the body out of “fight or flight.”
-
Yoga Nidra (“yogic sleep”) moves the brain into deeply healing alpha and theta states.
Rest isn’t passive; it’s an active recalibration of the whole system. It’s how we come home to ourselves.
So if you’re feeling wired and tired — you’re not failing. You’re just living in a culture that has forgotten how to pause.
SYRN is an invitation to relearn that pause — to soften, breathe, and let your body remember how to rest.

Why Rest Isn’t Lazy — And Why You Probably Need More of It
Have you ever noticed how hard it is to truly rest?
Not just collapsing on the sofa scrolling your phone, but actually stopping — softening, breathing, letting go.
Most of us are brilliant at doing. We push, plan, produce, and power through — until our bodies start whispering (or shouting) for us to slow down. The problem is, our culture doesn’t reward rest. We’re told to keep going, to stay productive, to “fit in self-care” between meetings.
But here’s the truth: your nervous system doesn’t work that way.
As a yoga therapist and the creator of SYRN — a restorative practice combining Somatics, Yin, Restorative and Yoga Nidra — I’ve spent years studying how our bodies move from tension into ease. The SYRN method is built around this idea: that true rest is not passive. It’s a biological process — a re-regulation of your nervous system that allows everything from digestion to creativity to repair itself.
Each stage of SYRN has a role to play:
-
Somatics reconnects you with subtle movement and proprioception — the brain’s map of your body.
-
Yin gently opens deep connective tissues, inviting stillness and reflection.
-
Restorative postures soothe the vagus nerve and reduce stress hormones.
-
Yoga Nidra — “yogic sleep” — guides the brain into alpha and theta states where true healing can occur.
This isn’t indulgence; it’s science.
When we move through SYRN, we’re retraining the body to rest differently — consciously, intelligently, with awareness.
So if you’ve been feeling wired and tired, you’re not broken. You’re just living in a world that doesn’t make space for the deep exhale your system craves.
SYRN was created to change that.
